In 2022 the pilot plant for biological treatment of blast furnace gases was installed at the steel production site of ArcelorMittal<\/a> in Ghent and connected to the blast furnace gas piping.<\/p>\n

The pilot plant enables the use of industrial CO2 emissions for bio manufacturing!<\/p>\n

In the gas fermentation process microbes consume and convert CO2, avoiding its release into the atmosphere, while simultaneously making sustainable bio products. Heart of the installation are 2 CSTR bioreactors and 1 Trickle Bed bioreactor.<\/p>\n

The pilot plant inauguration took place on June 15th 2022, see herewith a video impression including a peek inside the pilot plant: Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant on LinkedIn.<\/a><\/p>\n

The operation of the system started soon afterwards and is a great success. The performed tests turned out that blast furnace gas can be treated under stable process conditions and without any pre-conditioning of the gases!<\/p>\n

The next stop for the mobile unit is the VTT<\/a> Bioruukki pilot centre in Finland.<\/p>\n

Design and construction was realized by Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant<\/a> and MTSA Technopower 5.0 B.V.<\/a> with support of the European Union\u2019s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme in the framework of BIOCON-CO2 Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n
