Electrolysers and Energy Transition

Power Management and Power to Power

To enable the transition to a CO2 and climate neutral society, wind and solar parks are increasingly being constructed throughout Europe, both on land and at sea. Large farms, with a generation capacity comparable to that of a regular gas or coal-fired power station, can usually only be realized offshore. The generation capacity of onshore locations is usually limited to 10 MW or a maximum of a few tens of MW, but because the number of (potential) land locations is many times greater than the number of large offshore wind farms, we are still talking about a substantial capacity. Public awareness of the strategic importance of making use of this as much as possible and of limiting dependence on energy supplies from abroad is growing strongly.

However, the existing electricity grid is not capable of absorbing production peaks and at times of solar/wind scarcity, energy will have to be buffered in order to properly match supply and demand.

Green hydrogen produced with electrolyser modules in the 1 – 10 MW range will play a crucial role in the future energy and gas supply. For instance:

  • Align demand/supply green energy
  • Capturing production peaks of wind and solar power.
  • Hydrogen as a natural gas replacement for industrial high-temperature applications
  • Hydrogen as an industrial raw material
  • Hydrogen as a natural gas replacement for building heating
  • Hydrogen as a replacement for fossil fuels for mobility, especially for heavy transport.

MTSA Technopower 5.0 responds to this development and future need by developing and offering a product line of MTSA Electrolysers and related electrolyser peripheral equipment. With our electrolysers we mainly aim at the decentralized and dynamic character of green electricity production on land.

MTSA method

For this development, MTSA Technopower 5.0 focuses primarily on PEM Electrolyser Technology. Although PEM electrolyser technology is still relatively young, it has already proven itself sufficiently to be able to be used reliably on a relevant scale. Due to automation, optimization and scaling up of the PEM electrolyser production process, as well as through electrolyser innovations, the cost price per kg of hydrogen of PEM electrolysers is expected to fall faster than with other electrolyser technologies. Other important advantages that the PEM electrolyser technology offers are:

  • Hydrogen production up to 40 bar possible – sufficient for injection into a hydrogen network
  • Modular – Fits and scales to most locations on land
  • Flexible – PEM electrolysers react immediately to the dynamic supply of green energy and can also be switched off if there is a lack of it.
  • PEM Electrolysers are more compact and have a smaller footprint than related hydrogen production techniques
